Exeter Major Races
Exeter Racecourse is set in the beautiful Devonshire countryside and is widely accepted to be one of the best jump tracks in the United Kingdom.
The course plays host to 16 horse racing meetings between October and May each year with one of the key meetings being the William Hill Haldon Gold Cup Day which is held in November. This race was won by the champion steeplechaser Best Mate in 2001, but while attempting the same race in 2005 he sadly died of a suspected heart attack on the way back to the course stables.
The national hunt right handed course oval shaped and is very suited to gallopers, the final straight is uphill all the way and a good stamina test.
Top jockey at this racecourse is Richard Johnson, but the other competitors that do well at this course include Ruby Walsh and 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Tony McCoy. Due to its closeness to several major stables it is frequented by the likes of Paul Nicholls and Philip Hobbs.
