What is the John Of Gaunt Stakes?
The John Of Gaunt Stakes is a Group 3 race run at Haydock Park and is open to horses aged four years or older. Taking place in late May or early June, the John Of Gaunt Stakes is a race run over seven furlongs and 37 yards, and is often a competitive betting heat for punters to enjoy.
Originally run as a listed event, the John Of Gaunt Stakes was promoted to Group 3 status in 2008 and is now the target for those horses that fall below Group 1 and 2 level, but have the capabilities of being better than a handicapper. Sir Michael Stoute has a decent record in the race and saddled Main Aim to back-to-back victories in 2009 and 2010, while Safe Voyage was victorious in the 2019 which was the springboard to a tilt at the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on British Champions Day.
What happened in the 2019 John Of Gaunt Stakes?
John Quinn's Safe Voyage recorded a fourth win from four starts at Haydock Park as the 5/4 favourite sauntered to victory in the 2019 John Of Gaunt Stakes. Showing a fine turn of foot up the inside, Safe Voyage pulled comfortably clear of Suedois, who stayed on best of the rest in second spot, while Snazzy Jazzy completed the placings by grabbing third spot.
