How Was The 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup Won?
When looking at the Cheltenham Gold Cup market you will always see a few towards the head of the betting that competed in the previous year's contest and the 2023 renewal throws up some hugely vital clues when trying to decipher the 2024 running of the 3m 2f 70y event.
Top Irish trainer Willie Mullins trained the winner of the race for the third time in five years in 2023 as Galopin Des Champs was a spectcaular winner of the blue riband event, as the favourite cruised through the contest before being unleashed by Paul Townend and duly edged out the Paul Nicholls-trained Bravemansgame, who was gallant in defeat. That pair are destined to lock horns once again in the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and while Bravemansgame will have one eye on the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, Galopin Des Champs will be trained for Cheltenham Gold Cup glory once again.
The likes of Dan Skelton's Protektorat, Gordon Elliott's Conflated and the Emmet Mullins-trained Grand National winner Noble Yeats failed to figure at the finish, but could return for more in 2024, while Ahoy Senor's relatively late fall in the event left some questioning whether he could've played his part in the finish.
October Form Pointers
We saw some stars of the Irish National Hunt scene do battle in the Grade 3 Irish Daily Star - Best For Racing Coverage Chase at Punchestown in mid-October as 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo locked horns with dual Cross Country Chase hero Delta Work and former Irish Gold Cup hero Conflated and it was the former Gold Cup champion that showed his class to prevail. Given a prominent ride by Rachael Blackmore, Minella Indo produced a fine jumping display to get the better of outsider Hurricane Georgie with Delta Work and Conflated finishing way back.
Reigning Grand National hero Corach Rambler is destined for a crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2024, but Lucinda Russell's stable star failed to fire on his return at Kelso in late October and he suffered a disappointing defeat. In the aftermath Russell was quick to point out her dual Cheltenham Festival winner will come on significantly for the run, but he will need to improve significantly as the season goes on and is unsurprisingly still a big price for the Gold Cup in 2024.
November Form Pointers
The first big trial of the season for the Cheltenham Gold Cup took place at a rain soaked Wetherby and a bit of a surprise ensued. Bravemansgame won the 2022 renewal and was sent back to Wetherby by Paul Nicholls in the hope of defending his title, with Ahoy Senor the second favourite. Much like in the 2022 renewal, Ahoy Senor looked very much in need of the run and blew out quickly, allowing Bravemansgame to press on with a certain Irish raider.
Gentlemansgame for Mouse Morris came into the race hard fit after a good reappearance and the stunning white horse was matching the King George champion stride for stride for much of the race. Heading to the last obstacle, most would agree Bravemansgame was travelling sweeter, however he made a shuddering error under a motionless Harry Cobden and Gentlemansgame for Ireland took full advantage to take a few lengths lead and continue finding more up the straight.
There will be much debate as to which horse would've won if Bravemansgame had jumped the last in his customary perfect fashion, but one thing is for sure. Gentlemansgame dethroning him means he is a definite Gold Cup contender and the seven year old warrants plenty of respect after being cut into as short as 20/1 for Cheltenham glory come March.
Gerri Colombe - second in the 2022 Brown Advisory and a winner of the Mildmay Novices' Chase last season - is regarded as one of the leading Gold Cup contenders, but he will have to improve on his victory in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal. Eventually getting up to beat the star trio of Conflated, Minella Indo and Envoi Allen, Gordon Elliott's charge was very workmanlike during his success, but he did show staying is certainly his strong suit and he's sure to be a key contender for the showpiece event.
The last weekend in November saw some big guns take to the track and the first was reigning champion Galopin Des Champs, who failed to kick off his season with a win as he was beaten again by Punchestown Gold Cup conqueror Fastorslow, who continues to blossom for Martin Brassil. Sticky jumping at times saw Galopin Des Champs struggle at times and he was unable to quicken in the closing stages as Fastorslow stormed to victory to put himself in the Gold Cup picture.
A day prior to that Punchestown shock, Bravemansgame and Protektorat were both beaten by Royale Pagaille in the Betfair Chase. The Venetia Williams-trained Haydock specialist produced a huge career best pulling comfortably clear of Bravemansgame, who failed to sparkle, while Protektorat was too keen through the early stages and is sure to improve for the run.
