What is the King Edward VII Stakes?
The King Edward VII Stakes is a Group Two race for three-year-old colts and geldings run on day four of Royal Ascot.
First run in 1834, the King Edward VII Stakes is a race that is targeted by some of the premier middle-distance horses in the UK & Ireland and being only two weeks after the Derby then you can occasionally see horses that competed in the Classic aim to bounce back to form. For those horses that may not handle the unique test that is the Derby could well be kept back for this contest, so it can often throw up a smart winner.
What happened in the 2020 King Edward VII Stakes?
William Muir's Pyledriver was a shock winner of the 2020 King Edward VII Stakes, as the 18/1 outsider produced a career best performance to take the coveted Group 2 contest on the opening day of Royal Ascot. Aidan O'Brien's Mogul was sent off a warm order for the event, but he failed to fire and couldn't get in on the action, and it was left to Pyledriver - ridden by Martin Dwyer - to sparkle on Tuesday afternoon, as he eventually beat Arthur's Kingdom to enhance his potential Epsom Derby claims.
