What is the Queen's Vase Stakes?
Taking place on day two of Royal Ascot, the Queen's Vase is a Group Two race that attracts some of the elite three-year-old stayers in the UK & Ireland, and it can often be used as a significant trial for the St Leger later in the season.
First run in 1838, the Queen's Vase has moved around the Royal Ascot schedule, but now sits in the race two slot on day two of the meeting, and it follows the Queen Mary Stakes, so the Wednesday kicks off with the juvenile fillies battling it out over five furlongs in the Queen Mary and then the three-year-olds compete over this long distance in the Queen's Vase, with all the runners holding aspirations to become a potential Cup horse in the coming seasons.
What happened in the 2020 Queen's Vase Stakes?
Aidan O'Brien's Santiago was a fine winner of the Queen's Vase as the Ballydoyle raider gave his handler his fourth win in six years of the staying three-year-old contest. Travelling sweetly in behind the leaders, Santiago was sent to the front by Ryan Moore as they headed into the final two furlongs, and having found the rail to run along in the closing stages he held off Berkshire Rocco, who put up a bold effort, while Al Dabaran grabbed third spot.
Santiago wins the Queen's Vase at @Ascot for Ryan Moore & Aidan O'Brien with an emphatic finish! https://t.co/5E8bHQLXr8
