Mildmay Novices' Chase Tips & Odds

The near 40-year history of the Mildmay Novices' Chase has seen some classy horses claim the Mildmay, but it is of course difficult to pick just one winner.

The 2008 winner Big Buck's is worthy of a mention for all that he is best known for his exploits as a staying hurdler, while the 2016 winner Native River would go on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following season.  

On balance though, it is the 1982 Mildmay winner Burrough Hill Lad who is perhaps the most iconic winner of the race. Burrough Hill Lad subsequently developed into one of the best staying chasers of his generation, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Hennessy Gold Cup, the Welsh National and the King George VI Chase during his career.

The path to the Mildmay Novices’ Chase is a defined one, and the key players from both the RSA Chase and the JLT Novices’ Chase at the previous month’s Cheltenham Festival regularly take their chance here. Earlier in the season, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown, the Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham and the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

The winning most jockey in the history of the Mildmay Novices’ Chase is Richard Dunwoody, with four wins. Dunwoody’s four wins in the Mildmay came courtesy of Against The Grain (1987), Sparkling Flame (1991), Banjo (1995), and Cyborgo (1997) to his name in the race.

Nicky Henderson has enjoyed six Mildmay wins so far during his career, with Sparkling Flame (1991), Irish Hussar (2003), Burton Port (2010), Might Bite (2017) Terrefort (2018), and Chantry House all scoring for the Seven Barrows handler.
