Ayr Major Races
Ayr Racecourse is Scotland's leading racecourse and it is used for flat and national hunt racing which normally consists of around 27 race days.
The track is a left-handed oval track that’s consists of 13 furlongs which includes a straight run-in of half a mile. When running on the straight course low numbers are favoured in the draw stall advantage.
Notable flat races that are held here include the Ayr Gold Cup and the Firth of Clyde Stakes and it also used to play host to the Scottish Derby which was held annually but was last ran in 2005 and replaced by the short lived York Stakes that was ran from York Racecourse.
The venue also plays host to three National Hunt races the most famous of which is the Scottish Grand National, a grade 3 race that is the Scottish equivalent of the Grand National ran at Aintree. The race is ran during the 2-day Scottish Grand National Festival.
The top jockeys at this course are Paul Hanagan and Phillip Makin, Hanagan was crowned the champion Flat Jockey for 2010. The top trainer at this ground is also Paul Hanagan’s boss Richard Fahey head of R F Racing Ltd stables in Molton.
Within the grounds of Ayr Racecourse is the Western House Hotel which was winner of the 2009 Scottish Hotel of the Year and is one of the most sought after Wedding venues, winning Scottish Wedding Venue of the Year from 2007 – 2009.
