Betfair Chase Tips
GREY DAWNING looks a worthy favourite to go one place better than he did in 2024 for the 2025 Betfair Chase, and Billy Grimshaw goes into more detail in his ITV Racing tips piece below...
Grey Dawning
What is the Betfair Chase?
The Betfair Chase is a Grade One race run over a trip of three miles and one furlong at Haydock Park each November and is open to horses aged five and over.
The Betfair Chase is the first leg of the national hunt triple crown with any horse that wins the Haydock contest, the King George and the Gold Cup in the same season picking up a cool £1million dollars. The race is a big one its own right but does also act as a key stepping stone for the Cheltenham Gold Cup itself with the winner of the race likely to jump right towards the head of the ante-post betting for the big race at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring.
What happened in the 2024 Betfair Chase?
Ten year old ROYALE PAGAILLE defended is Betfair Chase crown and downed the fancied young pup Grey Dawning in the process.
The history of the Betfair Chase
The Betfair Chase only has a short history, having first been run in 2005, but already it is a vital stop on the road to Cheltenham as we get to see some of the best staying chasers in the country clash at Haydock Park.
Registered as the Lancashire Chase, the race was originally run over three miles but was extended slightly to allow the runners have a longer run towards the first bend. The race is often used as the perfect prep for horses contesting the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day with the race in Lancashire coming a month before the Christmas spectacular.
The jockey Club £1million bonus used to add an extra angle to the Betfair Chase, having been re-introduced in 2015 and meaning that any connections with half an eye on the money would of course enter their horse for Haydock. However, the bonus is no longer on offer and that has hurt the race's star power.
Who is the most iconic winner of the Betfair Chase?
Some legendary horses have won the Betfair Chase during its short history with Cue Card and Bristol De Mai just two of the excellent chasers to have picked up Grade One glory in Lancashire during their illustrious careers.
There is no doubt though that it is Kauto Star who is the most iconic winner of the race with the Paul Nicholls trained star winning it on less than four remarkable occasions. The two-time Gold Cup hero loved to stop off at Haydock on the way to King George glory during his career with his final success in the race at the age of eleven in 2011 one that will live long in the memory.
Are there any trials for the Betfair Chase?
The Betfair Chase comes early on in the season which means that often horses will be having their first run of the campaign in the race.
Having said that, the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby can be used as a prep for Haydock for trainers looking to get a run into their staying chasers with Ballyoprtic one example of a horse winning in Yorkshire before heading across the Pennines to Lancashire. Punters are well advised to look back at the race from the year before with multiple winners of the race common place with Cue Card, Bristol De Mai and Silviniaco Conti just three recent examples.
Who is the most successful jockey in the Betfair Chase?
The list of jockeys to have the Betfair Chase isn't a long one given the relatively new nature of the race but there are still some stellar names on the roll of honour. Top of the tree as things is stand is Ruby Walsh who win the race on Kauto Star in 2006, 2009, 2011 and Silviniaco Conti in 2012.
Who is the most successful trainer in the Betfair Chase?
Paul Nicholls has been a dominant figure in the jumps racing world over the past twenty years and that has certainly been the case in the Betfair Chase. The Ditcheat handler has won the race six times thanks to Kauto Star (2006, 2007, 2009 + 2011) and Silviniaco Conti (2012 + 2014) crossing the line first.
