What is the Greenham Stakes?
The Greenham Stakes is a Group 3 race run at Newbury in the early part of the Flat season in April and is open to three-year-old colts and geldings. Run over seven furlongs, the Greenham Stakes is a fascinating contest that can often see a potential 2000 Guineas contender line up and some have tasted victory in this event before going on to land Classic glory.
First held in 1906, the Greenham Stakes' most memorable winner was the mighty Frankel, who was a fine winner of the 2011 race before he went on to storm to 2000 Guineas victory at Newmarket and then going on to Royal Ascot success in the St James's Palace. Used as a springboard to greatness Frankel was not the only big name to taste victory here with Paco Boy (2008) and Kingman (2014) just another brace of star winners.
What happened in the 2025 Greenham Stakes?
The regally bred JONQUIL scooted clear in impressive fashion in the 2025 race at Newbury, announcing himself as a real 2000 Guineas contender.
