Cheveley Park Stakes Tips: Classy Mawj to sneak in the frame at Newmarket
A mouth-watering set of exciting two-year-old fillies will line up for the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon, as they possibly look to throw their hat into the 1000 Guineas ring for next season. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers takes a look at the juvenile showpiece here and picks out his best bet for what should be a fabulous contest...
Aidan O'Brien has a sensational recent record in this event having saddled four of the last six winners of the event, and the master of Ballydoyle will have a terrific chance of landing the prize once again as he saddles the current 9/4 favourite Meditate, who is looking to bounce back from her first defeat last time out at the Curragh. Having stormed to victory in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, the daughter of No Nay Never then went and launched to success in the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh, but the bubble burst last time out when she was outclassed by Dermot Weld's Tayhira in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. The pair pulled well clear of the rest of the field that day, so it's top notch form, but it did only come less than a couple of weeks ago, so it's unknown whether she would've got over that, so she could be worth taking on here.
Richard Hannon trained Tiggy Wiggy to victory in this race way back in 2014 and he could have another star sprinter on his hands in the shape of Trillium, who has been a real revelation on her last two starts and she's a 5/2 second favourite to win this event. Relishing the drop back to five furlongs two starts ago when romping to victory in the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, she showed her class again when reeling in the top notch sprinter The Platinum Queen in the Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster. Stepping up to Group 1 company for the first time, the smooth traveller is sure to be stalking the pace through the first half of the race before looking to unleash her customary late dash in the closing stages and she has to be a huge contender to make it three wins in a row here.

Karl Burke's Swingalong was a shock 25/1 winner of the Lowther Stakes at York last month, where she got the better of Mawj, who finished fourth that day, but the latter can turn that form around as she returns to her beloved Newmarket. Swingalong has to be respected at 7/1, but this is another significant step up in class and MAWJ can reverse that form from the Knavesmire.
Saeed bin Suroor's Mawj won at Newmarket on debut before being sent off favourite for the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, but she was no match for Meditate, who bounded to victory, but Mawj ran extremely well in second place that day. A winner next time out in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes, the Exceed And Excel filly edged out Lezoo (7/1) that day narrowly and that pair are set to lock horns again here and Lezoo could find it tough to reverse that form. Fairly disappointing at York in the Lowther, Mawj will love a return to Newmarket and at 16/1 she marks a terrific each-way alternative to the leading fancies in the betting.
Ralph Beckett's Juliet Sierra has been riding the crest of a wave of late and is going in search of a third win on the bounce here and the 10/1 chance will look to build on a decent win in the Group 3 Dick Poole at Salisbury last time out and adds more depth to the race. Paddy Twomey's Treasure Trove (11/) was a winner of a Group 3 contest last time out and is entitled to feature prominently here, but she could just struggle to deal with some classier rivals in a race that could see Mawj sparkle at Flat HQ once again.
