14:05 Kempton - Queen's Prize Handicap
There are not many more Jekyll and Hyde profiles than that of KAMBOO, with Richard Hughes' charge's form looking very much like a horse who either wins or puts in an effort to finish last. He has at least been dining at the top table on occasion when being stuffed out of sight, with his eleventh place in the Derby probably a fair reflection of his ability. To have even been entered in that race, however, shows how highly Hughes et al rate him and the fact he finished the season abhorrently, finishing last of fifteen at Newmarket after flopping at Ascot should not necessarily be held against him when judging this race.
He is a tricky customer, that much is clear, but he could well have been over the top toward the back end of a busy three year old campaign and with the horse now coming here off a long break, wind surgery and a gelding operation, there must be potential that he's primed for a career best if the latter surgery has had the desired effect. The return to the all-weather surface is also a major positive given his record is 6-1-1 on it, with one of those wins coming here at Kempton on his second racecourse appearance. That race has actually worked out incredibly strongly, as has his Newcastle Racing League win at the back end of last summer. He had a few in this field in behind that day and with the upside he has, I can see him being backed off the boards and hopefully winning as a sub 2/1 favourite, providing this is his big day. Take the price ASAP if you can!
14:25 Doncaster - Cammidge Trophy
A listed contest is the first that really piqued my interest on the Doncaster card, with the first race in Yorkshire impossible to be confident in and the second a devilishly difficult handicap to solve. There are some classy sprinters in here but also plenty of thinkers, however taking them all on their best form I would make SPYCATCHER clear favourite and as such will be backing him here at around the 5/1 mark. Sofia's Starlight is next to him in stall 2 and she should be the one to lead looking at the profile of all the runners, and we know Spycatcher is seen to best effect with an honest pace to aim at.
He has not quite hit the heights his talent should have done in his career but there is no doubting on his day he's the best horse in this race and while Marshman brings good winter AW form an James's Delight obviously has his chance - although stall 1 is a negative - I don't think either on their best day are as quick as Karl Burke's seven year old. He actually finished ahead of the favourite at Deauville toward the end of last season before a solid sixth in the Champion Sprint Stakes on soft, so with give underfoot, a decent record fresh and a solid make up of the race in terms of a horse to take him into the finish, he has an outstanding chance and is my first bet of Lincoln Day.
