What is the Windsor Castle Stakes?
The Windsor Castle Stakes is a Listed event, which takes place as the final race on day two of Royal Ascot, and is a race contested by a host of two-year-old sprinters.
It may be a race that lacks the quality that some of the Group races have to offer at the Royal meeting, but the Windsor Castle is often used as a springboard for those juveniles that could turn into an elite sprinter later in their careers. It's a race that can unearth a star sprinter that could well return to Royal Ascot the following year to compete in races like the Commonwealth Cup, as winners are often open to significant improvement, so it's an exciting race when thinking about the future.
What happened in the 2020 Windsor Castle Stakes?
Andrew Balding's Tactical was a fine winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes, as the well-backed 7/2 favourite scooted home on the stands side and handed Her Majesty The Queen a Royal Ascot winner. As is the norm for the Listed event, they went a fierce gallop, but James Doyle unleashed Tactical with a late surge to storm to the front to bag a royal winner. Yazaman stayed on best of the rest to just edge Muker in a tight finish for second and third, but it was all about Tactical, who was mightily impressive.
A royal win at Royal Ascot.
