What is the Lanzarote Hurdle?
The Lanzarote Hurdle is a handicap hurdle run at Kempton Park in January and is open to horses aged four years or older. Run over a distance of 2m 5f, the Lanzarote Hurdle attracts some proven, experienced handicappers and also some emerging young horses that will look to claim victory. While it's unlikely a horse will win this event and go on to claim glory in the Grade 1 Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, there have been some notable winners of the race. A race that was run over two miles for decades, Make A Stand was a fine winner of the 1997 renewal, and in that same year the Martin Pipe-trained star won the 1997 Champion Hurdle.
The classy Tiutchev won the 1999 Lanzarote Hurdle, but made his name over fences and went on to win the 2000 Arkle Challtenge Trophy, while more recently Yala Enki won the 2016 race, but he is a name more synonymous with the chasing division, while Nicky Henderson's William Henry won the 2018 contest before a year later claiming Coral Cup glory at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival.
What happened in the 2024 Lanzarote Hurdle?
A shock winner landed the spoils in the 2024 Lanzarote Hurdle as Dan Skelton rounded off a brilliant day with his 33/1 chance JAY JAY REILLY scooping the valuable pot.
