Curragh Major Races
Curragh racecourse (known to most race goers as the Curragh) name comes from the Irish word Cuirreach which means racecourse. It is a right-handed course that is two miles long and horseshoe-shaped, races of up to six furlongs are run on a straight course and it is the home of flat racing in Ireland.
The course has been linked to horse racing since 1741 and is thought by historians to have been used as a meeting of the Celtic Kings.
The racecourse hosts 18 race meetings per year running from March through to October. The key race at this course is the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby which is a Group One flat race that runs in June/late July and has a prize fund of over £600,000; it is the Irish version of the Derby Stakes. Another notable race is the Darley Irish Oaks held in July which is a Group One race for fillies.
There is a draw advantage for high numbers on the round course and in sprints go for a low number.
The top trainers who frequent this course and do well here are Kevin Prendergast who is based nearby in Friarstown along with Aidan O'Brien and Jim Bolger. The top two jockeys at this racecourse are Johnny Murtagh and Kevin Manning.
