Martin Keighley's Back On The Lash has done most of his running at Cheltenham in recent times with seven of his last nine outings coming at National Hunt HQ, but he will head north to Liverpool on Saturday for his first crack at the Grand National and is a lively outsider in the latest Grand National Odds.
Regularly seen these days tackling the Cross Country Chase course at Cheltenham, Back On The Lash could be a horse that relishes the test a Grand National has to offer and he showed when beating Delta Work on Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham that on his day he is a class act and a return to the handicap sphere against that Irish raider will certainly aid his chances.
He started this season over hurdles at Worcester, where he finished second, while he was third at Cheltenham over fences on his second run, but he got his moment in the limelight when landing the win in late January. However, he failed to frank that form over Delta Work in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, as with the race a non-handicap the classy Delta Work and Galvin got the better of Back On The Lash, who was pulled up.
There's no doubting he's the sort of horse that could excel over this assignment and he has bundles of stamina that will give him another positive, but he does lack the class of those higher in the handicap and he is unlikely to be the first name on everybody's Grand National Tips, but you should get a decent run for your money.
