Arkle Challenge Trophy Tips: Allmankind could prove to be a thorn in Shishkin's side

Tanya Stevenson picks out her Arkle tips and takes on Shishkin with a classy rival in the Cheltenham Festival Grade 1...

Tanya Stevenson's Arkle Challenge Trophy Tip

Allmankind at 9/2 with bet365

Shishkin is a Festival banker of many, there are a plethora of positives for his chances, 21 favourites have won, since 1960 and there have been 11 odds-ons of which 10 have won.  Nicky Henderson has won the race on six previous occasions.  There is no Energumene now, and he is superior on ratings to all.  He won a Supreme but that isn’t a straight on gimmie in the Arkle.

However he looks sublime over his fences, sometimes majestic.  Lots of positives.  However he hasn’t beaten much in his three runs over fences, he hasn’t won a Grade 1 over fences and all of the three races have been run on his terms, he has been in charge of the tempo he has had the race won way in advance of two to three fences out and they have been on flat tracks.

He may just be a superstar and not appreciated for how good he is and this will turn out to be an exercise gallop for us to look on, behold and give all the adulation deserved.

Though Cheltenham Festival races have to be won, as in races such as these the runners are still learning, still improving at different rates or simply have different styles of running.

Henry de Bromhead surprised us last year with Put The Kettle On, the dynamic mare is my choice in the Champion Chase tomorrow.  In this year’s Arkle he runs Captain Guinness.  This talented six-year-old has only had seven career races, failing to complete on three of them, he was travelling well when brought down two out in last year’s Supreme, whose to say how close he would have been to Shishkin?  He fell when in contention last time out against Energumene.  Franco De Port eventually finished second that day 10 lengths behind yet I think Captain Guinness would have been ahead of that at the line and will be so again here.

I long for the day Captain Guinness gets a clear in a big race as I sense he has it in him to challenge, but for me Aintree is more his course, though he is not one to discount.

My selection all along for this race has been Allmankind, he has the speed, the agility and he has come along way from his tearaway days of last season.  He was brilliant, breath taking when making all in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices Chase at Sandown, it was his coming of age race.  A nice 72 day rest and sensible examination at Warwick, which as a chase course poses its own threats. He made a couple of errors but he is a novice, the impressive part was he left Sky Pirate 14 lengths behind and conceded 3lb to him.  The race was a means to put him spot on for this, the visuals of his schooling on Twitter have been exceptional.  Allmankind is attempting to become the 15th five-year-old to win the Arkle, the last horse to do it was Voy Por Ustedes in 2006.  Here’s to a great contest of ‘cat and mouse’ with Shishkin and may the best chaser win, hopefully Allmankind

Cheltenham Festival Tips

For what it’s worth other selections on Tuesday include Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle, she put down her marker at Leopardstown last time with an emphatic display in the Irish Champion Hurdle.

Aye Right has been so consistent this season, perhaps to his detriment as its meant he has been kept so high in the weights.  He ran well at the meeting last year behind Champ and this year’s Ultima isn’t as competitive as normal runnings.

I really like Roksana in the Mares’ Hurdle.  I actually would have been confident of her chances in the Stayers’ but Dan Skelton has chosen this avenue, a race she won back in 2019.  She has progressed so much since then, that run at Ascot behind Paisley Park and Thyme Hill showed that.

Homme Public is the one for me in the Boodles Hurdle, his form in France translates very well and showed some of that ability with the win at Market Rasen. Oliver Greenall is having a fabulous season with his best tally ever of 29.
