Champion Stakes Tips: Bridge to chase home Baaeed in Ascot showpiece

Can Baaeed end his career with a 100% record?
Can Baaeed end his career with a 100% record?

Ten wins from ten races has catapulted Baaeed to the top of the Flat rankings and the William Haggas-trained superstar will attempt to end his career at Ascot with another victory and the four-year-old son of Frankel is a red-hot favourite for the Champion Stakes, which is one of the showpiece races on British Champions Day on Saturday afternoon...

Dominant over a mile through the early and middle part of his career, Haggas elected to send his legendary colt over 1m 2f last time out at York's Juddmonte International Stakes and he duly relished the step up in trip as he sauntered to a stunning six-and-a-half victory on the Knavesmire. Demolishing the classy Mishriff that day, Baaeed will remain over ten furlongs this weekend and if he can continue to blossom on the track then he's going to be extremely tough to beat.

Bookmakers have certainly not taken a chance on the colt as he's a red-hot 1/4 favourite, but providing he can turn up with his A game then he's going to be really tough to beat, and with Jim Crowley sure to stalk the leaders through the early stages he can then unleash his customary sparkling turn of foot and pull clear of a field that will have to hope the Haggas charge underperforms for them to stand a chance of landing the prize.

Charlie Appleby will go in search of his first Champion Stakes success this weekend and he will have an extremely strong weapon to fire in the shape of former Derby winner Adayar, who is a 4/1 second favourite to land the prize. A sparkling winner of the Epsom Classic last season, Adayar showed the fire still burns bright when he sauntered to a conditions stakes victory at Doncaster, but this will be a whole new kettle of fish taking on Baaeed. Proven over a mile-and-a-half the Godolphin charge will hope it can be a real stamina test as he will look to get Baaeed out of his comfort zone, but the Haggas-trained raider has shown no flaws in his abilities and should have too much class for his market rival.

Sir Michael Stoute last trained the winner of this event back in 2000 when Kalanisi stormed to glory, but the Freemason Lodge handler will fancy landing a significant blow in the 2022 renewal as he will saddle the classy BAY BRIDGE, who could be the each-way play in the race at 10/1. The son of New Bay was hugely progressive last season that saw him end the campaign with a Listed win, but he showed he can dine at the top table when he stormed to an impressive Group 3 win in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. A decent second behind the battle-hardened State Of Rest in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, he then disappointed when fifth of six in a top-class renewal of the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. He will need to bounce back to form here, but he showed he can perform at Ascot during the Royal meeting, and while he may not have enough to down Baaeed he can finish in the top three.

The Haggas team will be spearheaded by the mighty Baaeed, but they will have another two contenders lining up and Dubai Honour (20/1) was well beaten back in fourth in the Juddmonte, so it's going to be hard for him to land a blow on his stablemate, while My Prospero was a Group 2 winner in France last time out, so heads into this in the form of his life, but this is another step up, so at 25/1 may struggle.

Of the others taking their chance, Stone Age will line up for the Aidan O'Brien team, who will attempt to win the race for the first time since 2019 when Magical prevailed, but the three-year-old has failed to kick on from a promising start to the season and will struggle, while Ayr Listed winner Royal Champion, Mac Swiney and Helvic Dream complete the ten-strong field, but will all be up against a star that can bound to victory in another faultless victory.
