Grand National Betting Guide: Runners, Riders, Odds and Tips

Grand National Betting Guide: All you need to know about placing a bet at Aintree.
Grand National Betting Guide: All you need to know about placing a bet at Aintree.

It's that time in the sporting calendar again, where once-a-year punters try to pick out the winner of the Grand National, and on Saturday 10th April the masses will select their horse for the Aintree showpiece. Whether you choose by the name, jockey or colours, the Grand National brings the sporting world together, and at 17:15 on Saturday teatime 40 horses will go to post for the world's greatest steeplechase.

With the bookmakers shut in line with Government guidelines, punters will be forced to place their bet through an online bookmaker, and here at HorseRacing.net we have all the necessary links into a plethora of bookmakers, who will be more than happy to accommodate your bet.

Jonjo O'Neill, who trained Don't Push It to Grand National glory in 2010 with legendary jockey AP McCoy in the saddle, will unleash the red-hot favourite Cloth Cap, but while the Trevor Hemmings-trained raider won't have to beat dual champion Tiger Roll, who won't be lining up, he will still have a host of notable horses to beat in what should be a magnificent spectacle at the Liverpool track.

How To Place A Bet On The Grand National

If you are new to betting then you will firstly need to open a betting account and you are able to do just that here. Click on one of our betting partners and follow the registration process and make sure to read the terms and conditions. Once the account is opened then you are good to go, and placing a bet on the Grand National should be a simple process.

Select your horse from the Grand National field, and then duly submit the stake you'd like to place, and whether it's to win or each way (more on that later). Once you place the bet, all you have to do is sit back and cheer on your selection in the big race! It's as easy as that.

Bet To Win Or Each Way?

With a huge field of 40 runners set to line up in the Grand National, then it's a tough task to select the winner, and so many punters like to place an each-way bet. If you simply back a horse to win, then your horse must finish first, and you shall be paid out as a winner. For example, if you place £5 on a 10/1 chance to win, and the horse wins, you win £50 plus your £5 stake. So, your betting account will receive a cool £55. Not bad, hey.

But, if you want to air on the side of caution and hedge your bets, then place an each way bet on your chosen horse. There have been some big-priced winners of the Grand National in recent years (Mon Mome 100/1 & Auroras Encore 66/1), while many have placed at huge odds. Each way betting consists of two bets, which is one part of the bet on the horse to win, while the second aspect is for the horse to place. So, if you were to have a £5 each way bet, it would cost you £10 in total.

Bookmakers offer excellent concessions for each way punters on the Grand National, with them often paying out an the first six or even the first seven places in the each way market. Let's take the first six place each way market for example, so if your horse was to finish second, third, fourth, fifth or six your each way part of the bet would be paid out as a winner.

It's worth being wary of the each-way terms, as some can offer 1/4 odds with some offering 1/5 odds in the each way betting market. If you back a horse at 1/4 odds each way then the price of your horse will be divided by four, while if its 1/5 odds then it will be divided by five. It's easier with an example, so let's say you back a horse with a £5 each way bet at 20/1 and it places. If you bet it with a bookmaker offering 1/4 odds then you would be paid out at 1/4 of 20/1, so effectively you'd have £5 at 5/1, which pays £30. If you bet it with a bookmaker offering 1/5 odds then would be paid 1/5 of 20/1, so 4/1, and the £5 bet at 4/1 would win you £25. So, the golden rule is to try and place a bet with a bookmaker offering the best each way terms.

If you are lucky enough to back the winner in your each way bet, then say you placed the £5 each way bet on a 20/1 chance and it won, you'd get your £5 win on 20/1 (£105 including stake) and then also the £5 at 5/1 (£30 including stake) for the each way part, so the grand total of your win would be £135!
