Lingfield Derby & Oaks Trial Tips: Classic clues to emerge this weekend

Lingfield Derby Trial Tips: English King won last year's Lingfield Derby Trial
Lingfield Derby Trial Tips: English King won last year's Lingfield Derby Trial

Steve Chambers previews Saturday's Lingfield Derby Trial and Lingfield Oaks Trial, which could provide some notable Classic clues for The Derby at Epsom next month...

Lingfield Derby Trial

Aidan O'Brien may have elected to bypass the Lingfield Derby Trial with Derby ante-post favourite High Definition, but the Listed event should still throw up some potential clues for the Epsom Classic, and the Ballydoyle team will be represented by Kyprios and Carlisle Bay. The spearhead of that O'Brien-trained duo appears to be Kyprios, who will be the mount of Ryan Moore, and fresh from a win at Cork, the Galileo colt will be looking to make it three wins from four starts.

Stepping up in trip again, Kyprios (25/1 for The Derby) will don the cheekpieces for the first time, and he should relish the 1m 3f 133y distance of this event, but he will need to improve significantly from that narrow Cork success, and there's more to like about O'Brien's other runner, Carlisle Bay (50/1 for The Derby). Twice raced as a juvenile, Carlisle Bay failed to build on a debut win at Tipperary, as he could only finish third in a Group 3 at Leopardstown, but with cheekpieces applied, he's set to improve as the season goes on. Only beaten by a length in that Leopardstown contest, Carlisle Bay has the potential to kick on significantly for the step up in trip, and he looks the value play.

Anthony Van Dyck was the last horse to claim the Lingfield Derby Trial/Derby double back in 2019, and with nine winners having achieved the double in its history, then this contest has turned into a key Derby trial.

Charlie Appleby's Adayar was a mightily impressive winner of a Nottingham maiden in October, where he scooted nine lengths clear to propel his name into the Derby picture, and he's as short as 10/1 with some bookmakers to strike gold at Epsom next month. A warm order for Saturday's event, Adayar boosted his Classic claims with a fine second in Sandown's Classic Trial, and he is another that will relish the step up distance. He was staying on eye-catchingly in that Sandown event over 1m 1f, so stepping up today should see him sparkle, and he could well turn out to be the classy performer from this group, but at a shade of odds-against he's no betting proposition.

Of the others, Scope (100/1 for The Derby) was second in a novice event at Newmarket, but he needs to build on that performance here, while last-time-out Nottingham maiden winner Third Realm (100/1 for The Derby) and Recovery Run (100/1 for The Derby) look to have their work cut out in a race that can see the heavyweights of Ballydoyle and Godolphin fight it out for bragging rights.

Lingfield Oaks Trial

Only two years ago the John Gosden-trained Anapurna used victory in the Lingfield Oaks Trial as a springboard to Oaks glory at Epsom, and the next batch of fillies will look to emulate that starlet on Saturday in a fascinating renewal. Several contenders hold Oaks entries and dominating the betting, at the time of writing, is the Martyn Meade-trained Technique, who is around the 2/1 mark for Saturday's event and a 25/1 chance for The Oaks.

A winner on debut at Wolverhampton, the daughter of Mastercraftsman then finished a gallant second to Wirko in a Listed event at Epsom. However, that form took a notable hit earlier this week with Wirko failing to land a significant blow in the Chester Vase when well fancied, so the skinny odds about Technique could be worth ignoring. Having excelled at Epsom on her first visit, she could be one that performs well in The Oaks, but from Saturday's perspective she's worth taking on.

Charlie Appleby's Nash Nasha doesn't hold an Oaks entry yet, but if she can sparkle at the weekend she could well be supplemented. Currently sitting as second favourite for this contest, the Godolphin raider ended last season with a comfortable win at Lingfield before she kicked off this season with a fine win at Sandown in a novice event. She began to assert in the closing stages of that event over 1m 1f, so a step up in trip should aid her progression, and she has to be regarded a leading player.

John Gosden has trained three of the last four winners of this event, and along with son Thady they will saddle Loving Dream, who could be the one to side with here. A winner at Wolverhampton on her second start, the daughter of Gleneagles improved further on her first run as a three-year-old as she finished a decent second at Wetherby, She finished behind the classy Noon Star that day, and that raider is as short as 10/1 for The Oaks. Loving Dream isn't entered for The Oaks, but her and Noon Star pulled over six lengths clear of the rest of the field that day at Wetherby, and while Loving Dream was two lengths behind Noon Star, she's entitled to improve further, and she could offer a decent value play against the favourite.

Hugo Palmer's Ocean Road built on a maiden success at Nottingham by winning impressively at Lingfield in December, and the 50/1 shot for The Oaks will look to kick on further on Saturday. The daughter of Australia steps up in class for this assignment, but she's held in high regard and should have no problems with the trip, and she could pose a few problems for Loving Dream, who can maintain the Gosden team's fine record in this contest.
