Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Tips: A home winner awaits at Longchamp

The eyes of the racing world descend on Longchamp on Sunday for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
The eyes of the racing world descend on Longchamp on Sunday for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

Arguably Europe's biggest race is set to take place at Longchamp on Sunday afternoon as the Prix de l'arc De Triomphe of 2022 takes place. The race may have lost some of its intrigue when Baaeed was confirmed to be heading for Ascot instead of this date with destiny, but there is still a raft of top class runners taking their chance. ITV will be broadcasting all the action from France and our man Billy Grimshaw has previewed the huge Group 1 and provided us with his idea of the winner...

The roll call of winners in the Arc de Triomphe reads like a who's who of racing royalty, with iconic fillies Enable and Treve both going back to back in recent times while legends of old such as Sea Bird and Mill Reef confirmed their brilliance with Arc victories, Sea The Stars and Golden Horn are just two of the legendary recent winning colts racing fans still wax lyrical about to this day an although he may never be regarded in quite the same league as the aforementioned legends, Luxembourg for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore would secure his future as one of the most sought after stud prospects with victory here. After a promising Guineas run in third when it was clear a mile did not see him to best effect, the son of Camelot was installed as Epsom Derby favourite. Unfortunately, a setback he picked up at Newmarket kept him out for much of the middle of the campaign but he stamped himself out as the one to beat in this race last time out in the Irish Champion Stakes. In behind that day were plenty who are set to reoppose here, including stablemate Broome who is one of the outsiders and could be used as a pacemaker for his more esteemed stablemate.

Another outsider well beaten by Luxembourg that day was Alenquer, who will be the sole representative of team Haggas after Baaeed was aimed at another target. It would be a massive shock if he were to be good enough but the Arc is no stranger to shock results, none more so than last year when Torquator Tasso chinned Tarnawa in last season's contest at a whopping 72/1. He is nowhere near that price this time around and with the expected soft conditions should have a live chance of going back to back, however with his odds shortening all the time he is one I am passing over for win purposes this time around.

Japan have longed for an Arc winner for what seems like forever and have two chances here, at single figure odds Titleholder and at a much bigger price Do Deuce. Both look to have a more than decent chance in what is an open renewal, and if the prices stay as they are then preference would be for the latter after an encouraging performance in his trial race last time out at this track on soft ground. Vadeni was thought to be arguably the best of this generation around Europe after his thrilling win in the Eclipse when just touching off Mishriff, who was a late supplementation for this race. Christophe Soumillon disgraced himself today at Saint Cloud but his ban for the elbowing of Rossa Ryan mid-race will not come into effect in time for the Arc so he can stay on board Vadeni and the French will fancy their chances of reversing Irish Champion Stakes form with Luxembourg back on home soil. There would arguably be no more popular winner of the race than the smashing racehorse that is Alpinista for Sir Mark Prescott, and the case for her is there for all to see. She is on a seven race winning run with Group Ones secured in three different countries and she comes here undoubtedly in the form of her life, but at the prices she is just a shade skinny for my liking facing the best field she will ever have encountered.

Sealiway is the selection of Steve Chambers (see his weekend Longchamp tips here) and his chances of a place are evident following last season's excellent run in this race and then his British Champions Stakes success. I couldn't put you off backing him each-way, especially with extra places available, but the one I am plumping for is ONESTO for the home team. Still just a thrre year old himself there was a lot to like about his half length second at Leopardstown behind Luxembourg and while that one was apparently primed for the big day in Ireland, surely Onesto will have only had the Arc in mind all season. Fabrice Chappet's charge has solid course form on good to soft which could prove crucial and is double the price of his Leopardstown conqueror in some places, which seems an overreaction to me. He may have been well beaten by Vadeni earlier in the season but I'd argue the step up in trip and more time to mature has seen him improve past that one and I believe he rates the best bet for the 2022 Arc de Triomphe.
