15:00 – 3m Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle (Grade 2)
Although his last three starts have raised questions about his current level of ability, it cannot be forgotten that PAISLEY PARK (NAP – 1 point win bet at 9/4) landed the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot less than a year ago. That was his ninth career win and his third at the highest level with another three coming in Grade 2 company. One of those saw him beat Thistlecrack in the 2019 renewal of this race and he ran well again here when losing out to the classy Thyme Hill last year. It has been a fine career for Andrew Gemmell’s star hurdler and I’m hoping that there are still a few more good days ahead. It looked as though he was going to finish well beaten on his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby last month, but Aidan Coleman’s mount showed his usual good attitude to stay on and take third. That should have put him spot on for this race and the addition of cheekpieces may help to overcome the customary flat spot that he often hits mid race. Connections haven’t lost faith, I haven’t lost faith and only five horses line up in opposition. His current price therefore looks very attractive given his past form and he is my pick. The consistent Thomas Darby is feared most ahead of the returning On The Blind Side, who represents the Nicky Henderson team.
