Yorkshire Oaks Tips: Tuesday to Triumph and Complete Oaks Double

York Races Generic 2

The Yorkshire Oaks has seen some seriously high quality renewals in recent times, particularly Enable's vanquishing of old foe Magical in a pulsating 2019 edition of the race. Sea Of Class was another top notch winner in 2018 between Enable's successes and although there may not be a filly of the class of either of those superstars in this year's field it promises to be a cracking race all the same. We've tasked Billy Grimshaw with finding the winner for us and he's got a full preview with a selection on a retrieval mission here...

Just seven are set to line up for Thursday's feature race the Yorkshire Oaks, which is another dagger through the heart of each-way punters when scanning the cards for the four days of high quality action for the Ebor Festival. Never mind though, as this septet all look interesting enough to be contesting this Group One contest over just shy of a mile and four, with the favourite Alpinista an undoubted stable star for Sir Mark Prescott and arguably the most high profile ride for Luke Morris since his days partnering great sprinter Marsha. The daughter of Frankel has not tasted defeat in six starts, a run stretching back to September 2020, and has some serious scalps on her record. None are more impressive than beating 2021 Arc winner Torquator Tasso in Germany (his homeland) around this time last year. Her four year old campaign marked her out as an animal out of the top drawer as she notched four straight victories. She showed she had lost none of her talent on reappearance this campaign when taking out the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in early July. As a five year old she of course has to give weight away in this contest but she is the right favourite and undoubtedly is the one I fear most in terms of beating my selection.

I was with Lilac Road at Glorious Goodwood in the hope William Haggas' mare could trouble Nashwa but I got that one well wrong and she threw in a stinker. Expect a better performance today at a track the trainer loves to train winners at, but it's hard to forget the image of her being so badly outclassed in a windy Group One last time out. This looks tougher so she has it all to do. Raclette for Andre Fabre adds an international flavour to the contest and she brings some strong French form to the table, but this being her first attempt at venturing outside of her native country is a concern and I think she could struggle in here against some quality fillies.

The Irish challenge is as stacked as it has ever been for a Yorkshire Oaks running, with three runners all priced sub 6/1 entered for the Emerald Isle and all for different connections. Firstly, Magical Lagoon for Jessica Harrington, currently the second favourite in most places. Her claims are strong after a good reappearance this season in a Group Three at Navan preceded two wins over today's trip, her best being her penultimate victorious run in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. She showed a game side in this clash with Sea Silk Road, battling back to get ahead after being just headed on the run in. Her Irish Oaks win was also impressive as connections insisted things did not go to plan tactically but she still got the job done. A horse like her who just does enough is always hard to get a handle on but she is respected for a team that are no stranger to top class fillies in recent years.

Paddy Twomey has announced himself this season as a real force and will send Earl Of Tyrone to the Ebor with a favourite's chance on Saturday. The handler has in fact never had a runner at York and his first will be in this race, one of his stable stars La Petite Coco. Her stamina is without question as she has won over this trip on soft ground before and her sole start this campaign came when winning the Group One Pretty Polly at the Curragh back in June, a race in which she was always prominent and won in a cosy fashion in the end. Twomey has admitted he would like the ground a touch softer for his filly but the daughter of Ruler of the World will be a rival none will be taking lightly if she does line up. The speed at which the ground will dry out at York, even with the forecast rain, does slightly put me off her chances of claiming another Group One here, however.

Along with the favourite, Twomey's charge will have to give both Magical Lagoon and my pick for the race TUESDAY nine pounds on the Knavesmire, which will be no mean feat. Admittedly when dismissing the chances of Lilac Road I claimed to be of an unforgiving nature, so giving the vote to Tuesday on the back of her woeful Irish Derby run may leave some puzzled. However, I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she just was not going a yard that day at the Curragh. With that race forgotten about, I think she is the best horse in this race. Her win at Epsom was somewhat overshadowed by the hard luck story that befell Emily Upjohn, but watching the race again Tuesday hardly had an ideal start or passage either and I was very impressed with both her finishing kick and guts in the Classic. Ryan Moore will be in the saddle once again and with his form this season that can only be a positive, and I think at double the odds of the favourite at the time of writing she is certainly worth backing to atone for her Irish Derby flop and bring home more Oaks glory to Ballydoyle.
