The Champion Hurdle is the feature event on Tuesday as the elite hurdlers do battle over this 2m 87y trip and down the years it's been a race that has been won by some of the stars of the turf and the 2023 renewal will see last year's Supreme Novices' Hurdle hero Constitution Hill lock horns with the 2022 County Hurdle winner State Man, and that pair dominate the betting. Aiming to point you in the right direction of the winner we look back at the recent trends of the race, as well as focusing on tips from a multitude of racing tipsters and also pick out our selection for the race.
Here are the trends for the Champion Hurdle over the last ten years, so Constitution Hill certainly fits the mould as favourites have an excellent record in the race and he was an easy winner last time out.
Champion Hurdle Trends
- Seven of the last 10 winners have been sent off as favourite
- Seven of the last 10 winners have been trained in Ireland
- Four of the last 10 winners have been Mares
- Nine of the last 10 winners have won their previous race
Unsurprisingly, Nicky Henderson's Constitution Hill is all the rage with the racing writers with a whopping 14 of them opting to not take any chances by taking on the red-hot favourite for Tuesday's Champion Hurdle. Imperious in last year's Supreme Novices' Hurdle, the Seven Barrows inmate has continued on a rapid upward curve this season and he's expected to go and bound to glory here. Available at prohibitive odds, Constitution Hill is the most tipped horse lining up in the showpiece event on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.
Biggest Priced Tip
Only one other horse has been tipped for the Champion Hurdle and that is the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained I Like To Move It, who is as big as 25/1 for the Champion Hurdle and has been tipped by two tipsters. One of those is our very own Raceolly, who has all his Cheltenham Day 1 Selections here, while James Stevens has also napped the recent Kingwell Hurdle winner. A fine winner of the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle earlier in the season, I Like To Move It is looking to blossom around the undulations of Prestbury Park once again.
I Like To Move It (EW)
It's impossible to look away from Constitution Hill as he has looked a real star of the hurdling sphere ever since he stepped on to a racecourse and he can have far too much class for his nearest market rival State Man, who will struggle to build on last year's County Hurdle win in top class company.
However, at the prohibitive odds there's no attractive element to backing Constitution Hill, so you have to look elsewhere in the betting and in the without market the Willie Mullins-trained VAUBAN could be capable of more than he showed in his defeat by State Man in the Irish Champion Hurdle and last year's Triumph Hurdle winner could reverse that form. Around the 100/30 mark in the betting without Constitution Hill and available at double-figured odds in the each-way market, Vauban could benefit from a solid gallop from the outset and with improvement sure to come after his Leopardstown run he could be the value alternative to the favourite.
