Betfair Super Saturday Tips: Three to back with a sparkling Betfair offer at Newbury
With just five weeks before the Cheltenham Festival, this weekend sees the return of Betfair Super Saturday from Newbury. There will be a special appearance in the parade ring from 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River during the afternoon, and with previous winners at this meeting including Altior, Denman and Coneygree, it’s often a day that can really bring some excitement.
Not only are Betfair the sponsors of Super Saturday but their Sportsbook also has an excellent offer for the afternoon as they are offering a £10 Free Bet, when you bet £10 worth of multiples on Saturday’s UK and Irish Horse Racing. This betting offer applies to multiples or Bet Builders ranging from doubles, all the way through to best of a more exotic nature such as a Canadian or a Goliath. Here at HorseRacing.Net we’ve taken a look at some of the favourites who are running on Saturday that could feature on your multiples and potentially make some punters Cheltenham Tips a little shorter by Saturday evening.
14:25 Newbury - Hitman 7/4 - Betfair Denman Chase
In the third race on the card at Newbury we have the Grade 2 Denman Chase, where Paul Nicholls’s Hitman heads a field of seven. Part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, HITMAN has made three appearances so far this season, with his first start seeing him finish in second place in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree back in October, where he was beaten by a head by Riders onthe Storm.
The seven year-old was then given a run in the class 2 Graduation Chase at Haydock where he faced just three rivals, and comfortably came out the winner by a distance of 11 lengths after making all.
Hitman was then pulled up in the King George on Boxing Day after a vet later confirmed he had bled from the nose. At the time of writing Hitman is the 7/4 favourite with the Betfair Sportsbook to add the Denman Chase to his record which could well see him shorten from the current 16/1 for the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Hitman also has an entry for the Ascot Chase next weekend and with Paul Nicholls often open to swerving Cheltenham with some of his horses, that could well be a plausible path as we move towards the Spring.

15:00 Newbury - Greaneteen 4/9 - Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase
Next up we have the Game Spirit Chase which is open to horses aged five and old after being first run in 1953. The 2022 renewal was won by Venetia Williams’ Funambule Sivola, with the already mentioned Hitman finishing in third in a race that involved just four runners.
It’s another small field this time around with just five due to go to post, with GREANETEEN the odds-on favourite at 4/9 to come out victorious. Greaneteen beat Altior on the dual Champion Chase winner's final run at Sandown, a venue in which Greaneteen claimed the Tingle Creek in that same year of 2021.
With Harry Cobden doing the steering, Greaneteen was then sent off the 2/1 second-favourite for the 2022 edition two months ago, but was beaten by nine lengths by the impressive Edwardstone. It’s now somewhat of a retrieval mission after losing that Tingle Creek Crown although he does look very tough to beat in this Grade 2 test, which could see him get back on track for a crack at the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and a win here could see his Cheltenham odds shorten.
15:35 Newbury - Filey Bay 7/2 - Betfair Hurdle
Although it may be a Grade 3, many punters consider the feature race of the day on Super Saturday to be the Betfair Hurdle. In previous years this race has been one to offer potential clues for the Champion Hurdle at next month's Cheltenham Festival with horses such as Make a Stand winning both races in the same season back in 1997.
That however, won’t be happening with any of the runners this year, and the current market favourite for Saturday’s renewal of the Betfair Hurdle is the JP McManus-owned FILEY BAY. Well supported in markets throughout the week for this race, Filey Bay was a winner on his first two starts for Emmet Mullins since making the switch in early November.
Despite winning with a bit in hand in both handicaps heading into the winter, one would certainly expect that the seven-year-old needs to improve significantly if he is to stand a chance of winning here.
Saturday Newbury Treble: Hitman, Greaneteen & Filey Bay to win pays 16.82/1 with Betfair Sportsbook (Odds Subject To Change)
