Three Outsiders To Watch Out For In The Epsom Derby

Steve Chambers picks out three outsiders in the Epsom Derby that could cause a shock in the Classic, which is run at Epsom Downs on June 5...

Jim Bolger's Mac Swiney launched into the Derby picture at the weekend, as he produced a sparkling performance to win the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. Around a 6/1 chance for the Epsom Classic, Bolger's charge will be looking to get the better of a strong looking team from Aidan O'Brien's stable. Current favourite Bolshoi Ballet spearheads the Ballydoyle team, while High Definition adds significant depth to O'Brien's team and he too sits prominently in the betting.

But, with two weeks to go until the showpiece event, we pick out THREE horses at double-figured odds that could cause a stir in the coveted Flat Group 1, which is the feature event of Epsom's two-day Derby festival.

Sir Lamorak

He may not be one of the premier shots fired by the Aidan O'Brien gun according to the betting in this year's Cazoo Derby, but Sir Lamorak produced a scintillating performance at the Leopardstown last time out, and he could well be a dark horse in this year's Derby. While some of his stablemates have been blossoming in notable Group races in preparation for Epsom, Sir Lamorak was last seen scooting clear in a 1m 2f handicap.

Monumental improvement will be needed if he is to make a notable challenge in the Derby, but the manner in which he quickened around the field in that Leopardstown contest suggested that he's a real Group star in the making. Recording a fine time that day, the son of Camelot will be looking to emulate his sire, who bagged Derby glory in 2012, by claiming his own Classic success in early June, and he can't be discounted. Beaten by Bolshoi Ballet on debut, Sir Lamorak failed to taste victory in his two juvenile runs, but he has blossomed as a three-year-old with two very taking victories.

Available around the 20/1 mark, at the time of writing, Sir Lamorak is likely to head to Epsom as a third or fourth string for O'Brien, but he can ruffle a few feathers in a fascinating renewal.

Lone Eagle

Martyn Meade's Lone Eagle has been a real model of consistency throughout his career, but he showed his Derby credentials at Goodwood last time out, as he scorched to a fine four-length success in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes. A Group 3 winner as a two-year-old, Lone Eagle failed to land a blow on his first start this season, as he could only finished third in the Classic Trial at Sandown.

However, he roared back into the Epsom picture with a fine win over Yibir at Goodwood, and he shaped like the slight step up in trip for the Derby should bring on more improvement. That Goodwood win came over 1m 3f 44y, so he has shown that he can stay beyond ten furlongs with aplomb, and if the ground were to come up soft at Epsom in a few weeks then he could well be a huge player.

Available at 33/1, the son of Galileo will need to continue on an rapid incline, but Meade is likely to improve his colt further for his next outing at Epsom, and he could be one staying on in the closing stages of the race, and has to be on the shortlist at huge odds.

Van Gogh

Aidan O'Brien could potentially unleash a five or six pronged attack at this year's Derby, and Van Gogh is another of the Ballydoyle battalion that could make a significant bid for Classic glory. A Group 1 winner as a two-year-old, Van Gogh has failed to land any sort of blow in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh this weekend.

An improved third in the Irish 2000 Guineas behind Mac Swiney and Poetic Flare on Saturday, Van Gogh has shaped like a step up in trip is needed, and in the aftermath of the Curragh Classic, O'Brien spoke about his plans to send Van Gogh over one-mile-and-a-half. Around a 16/1 chance for the Derby at the moment, Van Gogh could be one that relishes the Derby trip, and he has to be considered.

Punters should air on the side of caution though, as O'Brien was quick to point out that he's undecided as to whether saddle Van Gogh in the Derby at Epsom or alternatively cross the water and take in the French Derby with his American Pharaoh colt. Whichever Classic he runs in, Van Gogh has to be considered a lively challenger.
