Mares' Chase Tips
Dinoblue is the defending champion and sets the standard, but she looks short enough against some younger, less exposed rivals. The plan all season for ONLY BY NIGHT has been this race, with only the potential of heavy ground meaning she could've switched to the Champion Chase. The ground will be nothing like that and as such this game mare who was bang there over the last in the 2025 Arkle can surprise a few, including the Mullins battallion, and win the Mares' Chase.
Only By Night
About the Mares' Chase
The Mares' Chase is a Grade 2 chase at Cheltenham which is open to mares aged five or older. It is run on the New Course over a distance of approximately 2 miles and 4½ furlongs (2 miles 4 furlongs and 127 yards, or 4,139 metres), and there are seventeen fences to be jumped. It is scheduled to be the penultimate race at the Festival every year, after the Foxhunters and before the Martin Pipe.
The newest race at the Festival, the Mares' Chase doesn't have much history. Many in racing lamented its introduction due to further dilution of the Festival, but to the race's credit, it has attracted a decent field in both runnings and seen some exciting finishes.
It was fourth time lucky at the Cheltenham Festival for favourite DINOBLUE in the 2025 Mares' Chase, as she powered away up the hill to send favourite backers, who had been on Kargese in the previous race and won, into raptures.
Mares' Chase Key Trends
- All five winners have been trained in Ireland
- Three of the five winners have been age eight, with the other two seven.
- All five winners had won their previous race before claiming Mares' Chase victory

Mares' Chase FAQs
When is the Mares' Chase?
The race takes place at 14:40 on Friday 13th March 2026.
Where can I watch the Mares' Chase
Watch the race live on ITV1 and Racing TV who also offer options to stream the race via their streaming services.
Alternatively most bookmakers offer a free live horse racing stream allowing you to watch the race after you've placed a bet.
Who is the most iconic winner of the Mares' Chase
With just two to choose from and both winning for the same trainer, it is hard to pick which of Colreevy and Elimay are the more iconic of the winners of the Mares' Chase. Willie Mullins trained both and in 2021 Colreevy defeated Elimay convincingly, stamping herself as the better horse. However, Elimay's win a year later and her redemption arc coupled with the exciting finish means she wins the vote by the slenderest of margins in our eyes.
Are there any trials for the Mares' Chase?
There is a plentiful Mares programme across both Great Britain and Ireland building towards the Cheltenham Festival. Often the mares that take part will stick to the company of their own sex leading into the big race on the Friday of the Festival, however, they are not limited to this and Colreevy in particular was mixing it in open company before her victory in the inaugural race.
Who is the most successful jockey in the Mares' Chase?
No jockey has won the Mares' Chase more than once.
Who is the most successful trainer in the Mares' Chase?
Willie Mullins has trained two winners in the Mares' Chase, making him the most successful handler in its short history.
