About the Kim Muir Challenge Cup
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup is a handicap chase for amateur riders, run on Cheltenham’s New Course over a distance of three miles and two furlongs, and is open to horses aged five and over. It holds a unique status as one of just three races for amateur riders at the Festival and is named in honour of both Fulke Walwyn and Kim Muir.
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup was established in 1946 and was named after Kim Muir, a cavalry officer who lost his life during World War II. The name of Fulke Walwyn was added to the title in 1991 after the legendary trainer, who trained 40 winners at the Cheltenham Festival. The race has been won by several recognisable names in the past, and Jamie Codd has built up a particular affinity in the race of late, riding the winner on four occasions since 2009.
DALY PRESENT just got up to deny well backed favourite Johnnywho in an exciting finish to the 2025 renewal.
Kim Muir Challenge Cup Tips
Early Cheltenham tips focus on how the race is shaping up rather than firm selections, with clearer betting opportunities emerging closer to the Festival. The Kim Muir is a race where the early picture remains incomplete until the weights are published in late February, after which attention gradually turns to likely runners. Final declarations in the days before the Festival often bring much-needed clarity, but jockey bookings are particularly important here once amateur partnerships are confirmed. The final factor is the ground, which is only established on the morning of the race and can influence both pace and tactics.
